Design Reporting Structure
Skills Involved
the task
Building a stable client reporting structure is a tough task. Thankfully, one of the products I manage at my job is a client-facing reporting/ROI tool, and so I'm very well versed in what clients are looking for in a marketing dashboard.
A client approached me to do some consulting around their Looker Studio reports, because they were having trouble blending Google Ads and Facebook Ads data, and their reports kept breaking.
With direct connectors to Google Ads (and Facebook Ads especially) via Looker Studio, these reports are inevitably going to go down, and go down frequently. I decided to pursue a 3rd party API and store the data in BigQuery so that it would give us a more stable connector, and then I could write custom queries to connect BigQuery and Looker.
the design
I don't feel comfortable sharing images of a client's Looker Studio reports, so I'll have to apologize for this one. :)
the result
The end result was great success, because the client was thrilled with changes I made, and the report was finally stable. It was also very fast due to the Google connection of BigQuery and Looker Studio.
Ultimately, the reports became so stable that I gradually started to phase myself out of the work, which, to me, is the ultimate goal. Clients don't need me to hang around forever if I build things correctly!
